Ally Bishop’s love for reading developed over the course of her childhood. She learned to read from her Father as he read children's books aloud to her before sleeping. Her Father made books come alive by using different voices for characters, added sound effects, and used hand gestures. Hearing these stories made her want to be able to read to make the books come alive as well. However, when Bishop had to read books herself, she realized it was a lot harder than what meets the eye. She would continuously stumble on words making the books sound dull in comparison to her Father’s storytelling. Frustrated with herself it took Bishop until she was eleven years old to develope the compassionate love for reading she has today. People read in today's society to: be entertained, escape the world around them, gather information, keep updated on world news, communicate with others, and learn new life skills. Ally Bishop learned first hand that to be a good reader it takes a lot of practice. Your reading only gets better if you practice, and continue to challenge yourself with new kinds of material to read. Reading is easiest for Bishop when she is able to envision herself as the character. The hardest part about reading for her is when the plot becomes confusing. This makes Bishop frustrated with herself for not understanding the novel, and she’ll stops reading the novel altogether. Bishop reads books that are science fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy. She often decided to read novels from these genres by reading book reviews online, and by listening to friend recommendations. Everyday Bishop reads one hour per night; whether this be reading text messages or catching up on world news. Ally Bishops love for reading is huge and she hopes that this year her love will grow even more.
Even though reading and writing go hand to hand in the world of literature, Ally Bishop despises writing even though her love for reading is passionate. People from all over the world learn how to write by teachers. Teachers begin teaching students how to write in kindergarten using phonic style techniques such as students ability to recognize a letter by their shape and sound. Some people write to: remember a moment, release their emotions, tell a story, share an idea, and spread awareness for an event. In Bishops opinion, in order to write good literature an author must have a story. Whether that story be from personal experience, around the world, or a fantasy it should engage the audience to read more. A good author should also have immense knowledge on grammar and spelling. In Bishop's case, she is neither a good at grammar or spelling, making writing her least favorite thing to do in class. If Ally Bishop was to write something it would be about her personal experiences in life because those are easiest for her to write about. Since she is very self critical it helps when a colleague of hers edits her writing and explain why the changes need to be made. She feels that this way she can learn from her mistakes easier. Ally Bishop writes in her journal four times a week to capture the week's activities and so she can look back on old memories in high school. In general, Bishop feels that her writing is about average for her age group, but would like to continue improving as a writer because she feels writing is a good life skill.
