This week in AP literature I drew the best cartoon turtle the world has ever seen. The reason I drew this amazing turtle was because it involves my groups visual metaphor.
This week our class got into groups of two or three to work on creating a visual metaphor a chapter in the book “How To Read Like A Literature Professor” by Thomas Foster. Each group choose a chapter and created a visual metaphor poster explaining the significance of a chapter using other summer reading books as evidence. My friend Haylee and I teamed up and decided to do our poster on the chapter about symbols.
Our poster was a fishing metaphor. We choose to do this metaphor solely because it was the first idea we agreed on. The poster shows a man fishing on a sea with a sun shining down upon him. We titled our masterpiece “The Sea of Knowledge”. The sea is filled with all different kinds of sea creatures each fish is different because symbols in a novel come in all different shaped and sizes. The sea the fisherman is fishing on symbolizes understanding of the story. Each individual fish is a different symbol that a reader, or in this case the fisherman, can catch from the story so they can understand the symbolization.
I really enjoyed this project for many different reasons. One reason being I absolutely love drawing. Another reason being because I was able to work with Haylee. We work very well together making this project even better. Lastly, I really enjoyed this project because I relearned the importance of symbols in literature. While making the poster I began thinking about symbols in the books I read over the summer. In my perspective symbols, add to the understanding of a story and without them a reader understands the story at the bare minimum.
Now when I read books I'll be floating on the "Sea of Knowledge", and the boat will be filled to the brim with fish.
Here's a link to some awesome fishing metaphors!
