This week I learned multiple things about how create an essay. For the past couple of weeks in AP Lit we have been working on our elements of fiction essays. My partner Sana and I choose fantasy and point of view as our elements of fiction. Choosing the topic was the easiest part of the entire project. Writing the essay, however, was a nightmare.
In my opinion, the hardest part about writing an essay is creating a introduction paragraph. The introduction paragraph in any essay determines if a reader is going to be interested in the essay or throws it in the trash. The introduction paragraph should demand a reader's attention like a baby demands to be held when upset. There are multiple ways to do achieve this, but one of the main ways to achieve this is by creating a ‘funnel’. The essay starts out in a broad examination of the topic, than eventually whittling away at the large statement until the author's thesis statement remains. This week I learned how to create an engaging introduction paragraph when the thesis of an essay is already decided.
When creating a ‘funnel’ in an essay when the thesis statement is already decided, the writer must ask themselves what information should be stated before the body paragraphs which will lead to the advancement of the essay. For example, in the essay Sana and I are writing about point of view, the definition of point of view is stated to help readers better understand the backbone of the essay.
